Positions that facilitate research

Becoming an administrator in academia may not sound like a career path for someone who wants to do a lot of good. But it could be. Research needs competent contributors, leaders, administrators and communicators. However, since these types of positions are rarely prestigious or well-paid, it can be difficult to attract the right people. Therefore, a role like this can have great potential for whoever would be a good fit for it. If you can free up 10% more time for a person whose research makes a huge difference, then the value of your work equals the extra progress made in that time. For the world, the important thing is not who does the research, but that it is done.

Cecilia’s work promotes research into antibiotic resistance

Antibiotic resistance makes infections difficult or impossible to cure and is a serious threat to modern healthcare. Both routine procedures (such as dental care and caesarean sections) and advanced treatments (such as operations and cancer treatment) depend on the fact that possible infections can be treated simply and effectively. There are projections that 10 million people a year could die from resistant infections by 2050, and already today the death toll is estimated at over 700,000 annually.

Cecilia works as secretary general of the PAR Foundation, a foundation that finances research and efforts to prevent antibiotic resistance.

“I work partly to get more funding for the work to prevent antibiotic resistance, and partly to make sure that we spend the resources as efficiently as possible.”

Cecilia is a civil engineer and has previously worked with entrepreneurship and start-ups. Contact with the ideas presented in this guide opened her eyes to the possibility of using her entrepreneurial experience in charity to make a big difference.
