Meet Ulf

Ulf has a Bachelor's degree in psychology and a Master's degree in public health, and has used his background to tackle some of the most pressing problems of our time with a systemic perspective. In 2017 he competed in the Young Champions of the Earth by the United Nations Environment Programme with a proposal for funding UNEP, and in that way combat climate change, and since 2019, he has been volunteering at the Happier Lives Institute, where he searches for impactful mental health interventions, for example by trying to create a research project about the physical activity and mental health. In 2022, he began working as a lecturer in public health, and thinks that teaching is a wonderful way to make an impact. His lectures focus on global challenges, such as water scarcity, climate change, poverty, nutrition, sedentary behavior, mental illness, pollution, antibiotic resistance, overpopulation, gender inequality and income inequality.

Addressing global challenges through innovative tax policies

Ulf wanted to figure out a solution that could address the many problems that we face, and is advocating for a systemic change through implementing “green basic income” and health taxes – a basic income that is funded by environmental and health taxes. He figured that taxes could be an effective tool, as they can raise revenues of governments and, at the same time, decrease unwanted behaviors and outcomes. For example, alcohol, tobacco, unhealthy food and air pollution account for 29,4 million deaths and 828 million DALY annually.

Ulf’s tips for people interested in his ideas

Ulf means that green basic income and health taxes have evidence-based solutions that are in line with solutions that already exist in the EA community, and in 2024, he published a post on the EA forum about his ideas. For people interested in exploring this topic more, Ulf refers to his post, particularly the “What would be the next steps?” section, where he has listed many organizations working on sustainability, basic income and systemic change.
