Your career is your greatest opportunity to make a difference, and research shows that some careers have a much bigger positive impact on the world than others (read more). But, how do you identify where you can have the biggest positive impact whilst still enjoying what you do? You’ll spend a lot of time working in your life, so making sure you find a career so finding the right fit is of importance for both you and others. To help navigate this complex landscape of finding the right fit to do good we facilitate this career course!

What’s this course for?

The aim of this course is to support you in clarifying and strategizing around your high impact career trajectory by providing a framework, giving you tools and offering insights throughout your career planning process. The main structure of the course is in two building blocks, preparation in form of reading, and exercises and sessions with some new content, interactive exercises, and dialogues. You will dive deep into the shaping of a high-impact career that aligns with your aspirations and lay the groundwork for taking meaningful steps towards your future endeavors. During the course you will also be encouraged to have 1-1 coaching with a coach in your residing country (also free of charge). 

Is this program for you?

  • You want to have a larger positive impact through your career, but you don’t have a plan or would like to review the plan.

  • Would like to have more tools and structure for thinking about your career.

  • Are willing to commit 2 per week for discussion and 1,5 hours in preparation reading and exercises.

  • Are based in or have a strong connection to the Nordic countries.

The content of the program will mostly be based on material from 80.000 hours.

This course will be hosted by Nordic national effective altruism organisation such as EA Finland, EA Norway, EA Sweden and EA Denmark.

Session 1 (Introduction to high impact career planning)

We will discuss and identify the key aspects of a dream job as well as starting to identify what a high impact career would look like for you. Introduction to key frameworks for thinking about different cause areas.

Session 2 (Exploring high impact career-paths)

The session revisits the previously discussed frameworks and delves deeper into the personal career application they will have. The focus of the session will be the distinction between cause areas and career paths, showcasing organizations relevant to a series of cause areas and concrete examples of high impact career orientations.

Session 3 (Mapping out what you know, love and could learn to love)

The session addresses mapping of career capital and personal fit, illustrating with clear examples. It will focus on aligning the desire to do good, financial viability, skills, and enjoyment, followed by exercises to identify personal fit while honestly assessing past experiences. We will also start clarifying the strategic focus of your current career phase. 

Session 4 (Identifying relevant career options)

The session delves into combining cause prioritization and our previous personal & professional experiences to generate a multitude of options for possible career paths. You will assess your current position, and map out realistic but ambitious career opportunities, whilst planning for adaptability. The session will also contain resources on how to make good decisions to move forward.

Session 5 (Turning uncertainties into tryable theories)

The workshop session involves identifying uncertainties in the options list you’ve come up with as well as refining your list of options into a smaller set of possible career paths. Further the session will focus on converting these uncertainties into actionable research points for investigation. 

Session 6 (Turning the plan into action)

The session will focus on making sure the plan is solid in a way that will integrate well with your life.
